The average resident of North Carolina drives a car every day. If this describes you, the unfortunate reality is that it is highly likely that at some point you will be involved in an auto accident. There are certain things that you need to do if you end up in a car accident. According to The Balance, one of the most important things to do after an accident is to be sure to stop.

Stopping is extremely important. Even if you think there was no damage you must stop your car. In the event that the other driver stops too, as they should, it is important for you not to take any responsibility for the car accident. Even if the accident is your fault, verbally admitting it can cause issues with your insurance. In this case, it is best to let your insurance company talk for you.

In that vein, try not to converse with the other person(s) in the accident any more than is necessary. Of course, you will want to make sure that nobody needs medical attention and to get insurance information, but beyond that the only people you should be discussing the accident with are medical professionals, your insurance company, the police, and possibly a lawyer.

You will also want to document the accident as well as you can. In addition to getting the insurance information from the other driver, you should go around and take pictures. If there are any witnesses to the accident, try and get statements. You will also want to call the police to ensure that the accident is officially documented. Calling the police may also be necessary if somebody at the scene is angry.
